The suspect in last Friday’s arson fire at Canopy World on Highway 99 in Edmonds — still hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center — is a former employee who left the business in spring 2010 to take another job, Edmonds Police Sgt. Don Anderson said Tuesday.
“There is no indication that he was disgruntled when he left his employment at Canopy World,” Anderson said in a written statement.
The 36-year-old Seattle man, who was captured by police after leaving the scene of the fire, is being treated for burns to his hands and face. It’s anticipated that he will be released from the hospital soon, at which point he will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail on the charges of second-degree arson, second-degree burglary and attempting to elude a police officer, Anderson said.
Damage to the business has been estimated at approximately $100,000, “but that estimate may rise substantially when a thorough examination and total loss is calculated,” he said.
The suspect’s name will not be released by Edmonds police until he has been formally charged by the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office.
