Edmonds Sea Scouts honored for saving man’s life last summer

Erin Shirey of Kamiak High School and Mirabelle Girvan, a 2009 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, are congratulated by Port of Edmonds Commission President Mary Lou Block after receiving a national Life Saving Award from VFW Post 1040 members Monday night. VFW members present were, from left to right, John Zambrano, Martin Spani and Frank Martinez.

Two members of the Edmonds Sea Scouts were honored during the Port of Edmonds Commission meeting Monday night for their efforts to save a man who fell into the water in Friday Harbor last summer.

Kamiak High School student Erin Shirey, 16, and Mirabelle Girvan, 19, a 2009 Edmonds-Woodway High School graduate, were on a week-long sailing trip with the Sea Scouts, a Port of Edmonds-sponsored youth organization, when they were awakened early in the morning by cries for help and pulled the man into a life raft.

VFW Post 1040 Commander Martin Spani said he read about the rescue in the local newspaper, and nominated the two young women for the national VFW Life Saving Award, which “honors individuals who have, without regard for their own comfort, taken action resulting in the saving of another human life.”
