The second annual Edmonds Public Schools Foundation’s Street Strut is next Saturday, Oct. 9 in Edmonds, and the deadline to register and get a T-shirt is Monday, Oct. 4. Cost to register by Oct. 4 is $30 adult and $15 youth ages 9-18 (includes T-shirt). After Oct. 4 the adult price goes to $35 and you miss out on the shirt. Ages 9 and under are free. Launched last year in honor of Lynnwood High School cross country coach Vic Bennet, the Street Strut is a 5 K (three-mile) run/walk on a route that covers some of Edmonds’ most scenic city streets. Participants include hard-core runners, families pushing strollers and even some four-legged friends.
The Edmonds public school with the highest turnout receives the coveted traveling trophy — a golden running shoe — and a cash prize for their school’s physical education department. Prizes are also awarded for the four schools with the most participation.
The event starts at 9 a.m. at Edmonds Civic Track and Field, 6th Avenue North and Bell Street. Early packet pick-up is Oct. 8, from 3-7 p.m. at Running in Motion at 401 Main St. Day of Race packet pick-up starts at 7:45 a.m.
Could be wrong (99.9% sure I’m right!) but I believe the Street Strut was launched last year in honor of longtime teacher, mentor, Edmonds District Stadium announcer and Legendary Kindest Man in the ESD, Bill Hamilton. This year’s Street Strut honors Vic Bennet, who also made great contributions to the district. But please let’s never forget Bill Hamilton – I still wish we could rename the Edmonds School District Stadium in his honor.
