Rocking along at the Maplewood Rock and Gem show in Edmonds

Miriam Gold of Edmonds and Katie Hemion of Mountlake Terrace, both 9, demonstrate a game at the Maplewood Rock and Gem show Saturday. If the arrow lands on a rock, the spinner gets to take it home. Both girls say they enjoy rock collecting as a hobby.

The Fall 2010 Maplewood Rock and Gem Show drew a crowd on Saturday, with adults and children flocking to the Edmonds club hall at 196th and 88th Avenue West to view the glittering display of rocks and minerals. The show, which features demonstrations and activities, runs until 5 p.m. Saturday and will also go from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

According to publicity chair Beverly Ryder, the Maplewood Rock and Gem Club — founded in 1951 — has 80 members. They offer rock polishing and cutting services, and an open shop every Thursday night from 7-8:30 p.m. They also rent out the facility for parties.

Rockhounds interested in joining can stop by the general membership meeting on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m., or can email info@maplewoodrockclub.com or call 425-338-4184 for more information.

Rock club member Michelle Broderson, left, works at the children's beading table as 4-year-old Christine Schank and her aunt Holly Merrick create a holiday necklace.
