A new site has been selected for the downtown Edmonds Post Office, and it’s just north of the existing site.
USPS real estate contractor John Logan told My Edmonds News Wednesday that the new Post Office will be located in a portion of the redevelopment planned on the existing Post Office site at 201 Main St. The redevelopment, by Doug Spee, will be mid-block on Second Avenue North and will be multi-story mixed use with commercial storefronts on the bottom and residential above, Logan said.
“I don’t know the move date very precisely at this point because the development isn’t built yet,” Logan said. “It will most likely be late 2013. Fortunately, the developer owns the current post office. He will develop the back portion of the site (from just beyond our dock, north) which will include the space we will occupy. Once we have relocated into the new space, he will demolish the current post office and redevelop the remainder of the site.”
The City of Edmonds has 30 days to respond to the USPS site selection but Logan noted that city officials have been involved from the beginning — including a presentation to the Edmonds City Council — and “have been supportive all along.”
