Mavs lose heartbreaker to Shorecrest Tuesday

By Quint Turner

The Meadowdale Mavericks had their chances against Shorecrest in a well-played game Tuesday night, but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Scots came away with a 54-49 victory on Meadowdale’s home court.

Throughout the game, both Meadowdale and Shorecrest were able to force key turnovers — the Scots had five turnovers and the Mavs six — and hit crucial shots. In the first, the Mavs seemed to outwork the Scots, but the score didn’t show it, and the quarter ended with a 7-7 tie. In the second, the Scots broke the game open with a 7-0 run, and a three-pointer from Shorecrest’s Colin Shands with 5:20 in the quarter gave them a 12-point lead.

Fouls became an issue for the Mavs. Torin Dooley had two at the end of the first quarter, and sat on the bench until the start of the third. Meanwhile, Keith Shattuck and Dylan Pontrello were scoring for the Scots, which took a 23-16 halftime lead.

The second half became a high-scoring, fast-paced game as each team scored eight points in the first three minutes of the third period. Tyce Tallman — who had 24 points on the night — seemed especially able to step up and deliver. Yet more foul trouble in the third — Dylan Buck (3), Sam Hong (4), Tallman (3) and Dooley (3) — prevented the stars from being on the court long enough. The Scots ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to hold a 39-28 lead going into the final period.

In the fourth, the Mavs shifted into high gear. Dooley finally got his first score of the game, draining a three-pointer to get Meadowdale within eight, and additional 3s from Linton and Tallman put them within five. With 1:58 to go, the Mavs cut the deficit to three, and with 1:22, they were down one,  47-46 deficit. But then Dooley received his fifth foul on a debated call, which seemed to take the wind out of Meadowdale’s sails, and the Scots hung on for a 54-49 win.

The next Meadowdale home game is Feb. 3, which is Senior Night.

Meadowdale scoring: Spencer Linton 10, Tyce Tallman 24, Sean Hennessey 6, Torin Dooley 9, Dylan Buck 4, Sam Hong 4
