Friday would be an excellent day to leave work early and head to Jackson High School in Mill Creek, where you can support Edmonds-Woodway’s 22-4 girls basketball team when they meet Auburn Riverside (21-4), in the first round of the state playoffs.
Under this year’s new state basketball tournament structure, as a lower seed the Lady Warriors must win or their season is over. (Our online news partner The Seattle Times has a good description of the new tournament format here.) E-W definitely has a score to settle with Auburn-Riverside, as the Warriors lost to the Ravens in the first round of the state tournament last season 51-39, and also dropped a preseason game to them 61-54.
The Warriors ended up in the consolation bracket of the Northwest 4A District tournament after losing in the first round to Marysville-Pilchuck. Since then, E-W has won four straight loser-out games to advance to state. Assuming a win on Friday, E-W plays again at 1 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the Kentwood-Lake Stevens game, also at Jackson.
