E-W spring sports preview: Boys golf team has ‘potential to surprise’

Like other spring sports teams, Edmonds-Woodway’s boys golfers have faced some challenging weather conditions early in the season, but coach Drew Pritchard is pleased with the team’s success so far.

Last week, the Warrior boys won the district tourney in Arlington, and Pritchard said his team “has the potential to surprise” in the very competitive Wesco league.

During last week’s district tournament, E-W’s Nick Nguyen was the tourney medalist, shooting a 36 on the Nile’s par 33 course. “I was pretty pleased with his effort,” Pritchard said. One stroke behind going into the 8th, Nguyen landed his approach shot within 18 inches of the hole and tapped it in for a birdie, then birdied the 9th to take first place.

The Warriors’ number-one golfer this season, Dylan Merrill, “is a very impressive player,” Pritchard said. “ The future is bright for him.” Other top Warrior golfers include Matt Thornton and Ty Tindall, who along with Nguyen are possible contenders for the state tournament.

“We’re in one of the toughest leagues in the state,” Pritchard said. “Jackson and Kamiak are always very strong, and it’s going to be tough to steal any league matches this season, but I think we have the potential to surprise those teams in conference play.”
