(Updated with details)

The Lady Warriors dropped a 53-52 heartbreaker to Bellarmine Prep Friday afternoon, and the loss knocked E-W out of the state 4A girls basketball tournament.

The Warriors were down 17-10 in the first quarter, but climbed back in to the game and had a 24-22 lead at halftime. At the start of the third period, E-W quickly extended its lead to 28-22 and was ahead by as many as nine points, taking a 44-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lions, however, clawed their way back and were up 47-46 with 4:47 remaining in the fourth. From there, the score went back and forth until Simonne Potts’s short jumper with 4.5 seconds to go put Bellarmine on top 53-52. The Warriors called an immediate timeout and then a second one to set up the final play.

Ashley Albertson threw a 3/4-court pass to E-W’s Madeline Kasper, who tried to score the game-winning layup, but the shot was blocked by Bellarmine’s Sarah Hartwell. With 1.5 seconds remaining, the Warriors tried again but the Lions stole the inbounds past to secure the win.

The Warriors finished the season 24-6 and will say goodbye to five seniors including Sydney Donaldson and Angela Woods, who each scored 16 points for the Warriors Friday. (Donaldson also had five assists, four rebounds, three block shots and one steal.) Senior Alex Kenney scored 10 points, including two 3’s, and also had five rebounds while Albertson ended her senior season with 12 rebounds, six points, six assists and five steals.
