MS Helping Hands: Here to enhance quality of life for those with Multiple Sclerosis

By Bill Brayer

What is MS Helping Hands? It is a 100-percent, all-volunteer standalone 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation headquartered in downtown Edmonds. MS Helping Hand’s mission is: “to create and provide services & resources that will enhance the quality of life for people with Multiple Sclerosis.”

MSHH is licensed and registered (EIN #91-2006980) in the State of Washington and is NOT part of, or affiliated, with any other local or national Multiple Sclerosis organization.

MSHH has no administrative expenses, only monthly operating costs. Between 90 to 95 percent of every dollar donated to MSHH goes to help someone with MS, either from donations for recycled durable medical equipment (DME) or mobility equipment (ME) items from the MSHH Donor Closet or from financial assistance grants.

Even if you don’t have MS, you probably know someone who does. It is estimated that over 3.5 million people have MS, which is a debilitating disease with so many symptoms, no known cause or a cure. People with MS constantly have to make changes in the way they live. Because so many of the symptoms are not visible to the naked eye, MS is often referred to as the invisible disease. MS is also called the snowflake disease since just as  there are no two snowflakes alike, neither are there any two people with MS alike. MS is considered to be one of the most —  if not the most  –serious neurological diseases there is.

No one ever asked for an illness or a disability, and MSHH is here to help those who are diagnosed with MS and their families. One day things are fine and the next day their whole world is turned upside down (topsy turvy!). Illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis change virtually everything. MS doesn’t discriminate: women, men, children, celebrities, people of all ages and races — everyone is a potential victim.

MS Helping Hands is here to help those with Multiple Sclerosis, and we invite the community to participate, first with your time and then with your financial support. Consider serving on the Board of Directors of MS Helping Hands-MSHH for a two-year elected term, working on an Advisory Committee, serving on the Planning and Development Committee, being a volunteer at the Donor Closet or working with our support groups.

Financially, you can make an annual commitment that is 100-percent tax deductible. The majority of the MSHH operating funds come from the minimum suggested donations for the used and new durable medical equipment (DME) and mobility equipment (ME) items recycled from our Donor Closet, located behind Petosa’s in downtown Edmonds. Other sources of income are grants, memorials, benefits or fundraisers, and personal and business donations.

YOU CAN NEVER DO TOO MUCH!
