The Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications from students who are interested in visiting Japan this summer. The annual cultural exchange program with Edmonds’ sister city in Hekinan was initiated in 1988. Since that time, the commission has organized visits for almost 600 students and their chaperones both to and from Hekinan, which has been unaffected by the recent earthquake and tsunami events in Japan.
The 15-day trip from approximately July 17-31 is open to up to 15 students, ages 14-18. The visit involves homestays with families in Hekinan and day trips to visit local schools and the city, plus trips to Nagoya and Kyoto, the religious and cultural center of Japan. The trip cost ranges from $1,300- $1,500, depending on airfare.
Application packets are available online or at the Edmonds Parks and Recreation office at 700 Main Street, from 8 a.m.- 9 p.m. daily Monday-Friday, and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. You can also request that a packet be mailed to you by calling 425-771-0230.
