To honor the best of the best at the upcoming A Taste of Edmonds, festival organizers annually hold the fiercely fun food vendor competition, the “Taste Off,” on the festival’s first day.

The Taste Off, scheduled this year for noon Friday, Aug. 12, recognizes the best main dish, side dish and dessert to be found among dozens of delectable entries submitted by participating A Taste of Edmonds vendors. These vendors come from across the U.S. and offer dishes that span the gamut of culinary creativity.

Some of the early entries in this year’s Taste Off include: soba noodles, shrimp and scallop crepes, halibut fish tacos, crab and shrimp chowder, and wedding cake-flavored shaved ice. To judge these palatable platings, a panel of local taste-makers has been assembled, including:
– Anna Hiatt, the current “Mrs. Seattle International”
– Edmonds Mayor Mike Cooper
– Captain Jack Sparrow, aka Brad Hoare of the Journal Media Group
– Debbie Bodal, owner of A Chef’s Kitchen cooking school in Edmonds
– Edmonds City Council members Strom Peterson, Diane Buckshnis, D.J.Wilson.

The winners of Best Main Dish, Best Side Dish and Best Dessert will receive a banner to be displayed over their booth throughout the festival.

Presented by the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, the 2011 A Taste of Edmonds festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 13, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 14. All activities take place at Civic Playfield, located at 310 6th Ave. N. in Edmonds. Pets are not permitted at the festival. Free parking and a free shuttle service will be offered from Edmonds-Woodway High School. Admission is $3 for adults. Kids age 12 and under are free.
