Monday night: Your chance to learn more about Edmonds property tax levies

My Edmonds News is sponsoring a forum Monday night on the three property tax levies that will appear before Edmonds voters. You’re invited to attend and ask questions about the pros and cons of each. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Public Safety Complex, 250 5th Ave. N.

We are not able to livestream the event but will record it and make it available for later viewing on our Ustream channel.

The three issues before the voters, and those speaking on behalf of each, are as follows:

Proposition 1: Otherwise known as general fund levy, the stated goal of this $1 million proposal  is “to help maintain service levels in public safety, parks, and other city services.” Strom Peterson will be speaking in favor.

Proposition 2: This $1 million levy proposal would be dedicated to funding street pavement overlays, which proponents say are necessary “to prevent streets from becoming permanently damaged, saving significant tax dollars in the future.” Darrol Haug will be speaking in favor.

Proposition 3:  At $500,000, this proposed levy would fund building maintenance and park improvements. Steve Bernheim will speak on the pro side of this measure.

All three levies would cover the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 and would expire after three years. You can see complete pro and con statements for each levy proposal on the drop-down menu of our Election Watch 2011 tab.
