Food bank programs across Snohomish County will benefit from a $5,000 donation made by the Fire 1 Foundation, a nonprofit community service organization founded by Snohomish County Fire District employees.
“Supporting food bank programs is a tradition for Fire District 1 that started almost 20 years ago when a group of firefighters passed the hat to collect money to sponsor a family for the holidays. It grew from there,” said Jim Grieco, president of the Fire 1 Foundation and a captain at Fire Station 10 north of Lynnwood.
Over the years, Fire District 1 firefighters have raised more than $60,000 for the Volunteers of America food bank programs.
The Fire 1 Foundation also supports other community service programs including:
-The Fire District 1 Good Neighbor Fund – Fire District 1 has long recognized that some situations require something other than a hose line or bandage. Firefighters can access the Good Neighbor Fund to help meet human-service needs they observe in the course of responding to calls in the community.
– Taxi voucher program – Firefighters can distribute vouchers for a free taxi ride for patients transported to the hospital who don’t have any other way to get home.
– Scholarships for fire service technology students.
– Support for programs that aid fire victims including Support 7 and the Snohomish County Chapter of the Red Cross.
“We’re grateful to the businesses and citizens that have supported our fundraising efforts and made it possible for firefighters to go above and beyond in meeting the needs of the citizens we serve,” Grieco said.
