Glacier Peak started off with a goal in the first 30 seconds, and never looked back in Tuesday night’s Wesco 3A game. Branson Corwin had two goals and one assist while David Linney scored two as well, along with two assists. Austin Panek scored the lone goal for Meadowdale in the 5-1 loss when Thomas Redd hit a cross from the corner, and Panek got his foot on it five feet away from the goal and put it over goalie Jesus Mendoza.
Thirty seconds in, Corwin got a through ball to the 30-yard line, dribbled down to the box, and crossed it right to Linney, who one-timed a shot past Maverick goalie Eric Henthorn to make it a 1-0 Grizzly lead. Seven minutes later, a corner kick by Michael Mikulsky bounced around in the goal box before Ryan Rodriguez deflected a low shot by Sam Hyrciuk that went in to make it 2-0 Glacier Peak.
Mikulsky almost made it 3-0 when he hit a shot from just outside the box off the crossbar in the 16th minute. Linney had another chance in the 22nd minute when he hit a bouncing ball just wide. In the 30th minute, it was 3-0 Grizzlies. Corwin took a shot just inside the box that bounced off the post right to a wide open Linney, who tapped the ball in the empty net for the easy goal.
The Mavericks struck back in the 34th minute, though. A long ball was tracked down by Redd in the corner, and he sent a blind cross that was knocked in by Panek to make it 3-1. The Grizzlies would respond in the 38th minute, when Corwin took a shot from just outside the box and put it past Henthorn to make it 4-1. The score remained 4-1 at the end of the half.
In the second, Glacier Peak started with more pressure. Linney took a long shot that just went wide, and he also sent a long ball into the box that had to be headed away. The Mavs tried to get back into the game though. Chuong Nguyen took a 30-yard shot on net that was stopped by Mendoza, and Justin Crichlow headed a Nils Odegaard free kick just over the crossbar.
The Grizzlies scored their fifth goal in the 63rd minute, just after all the MHS pressure. Hyrciuk sent a through ball past the Maverick line and Corwin picked up the ball on the edge of the box, faked out Henthorn, dribbled past him, and buried it to make it 5-1. The Mavs had most of the rest of the scoring chances in the game, but they were mostly just 25-yard shots that were easy saves for Mendoza. He only had to make one really good save in the 78th minute when a Mitch Hatzenbeler free kick from the corner of the box was put on goal, and he hit it high. The Grizzlies closed out with a 5-1 win.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-8-2, and play this Thursday at Lynnwood High, versus Oak Harbor, at 7:30 p.m.
