First Lady recognizes Montalvo’s work with foundation helping military families

Maria Montalvo, right, with First Lady Michelle Obama and Our Family for Families First scholarship recipient Jada Salahuddin and her father, Master Sgt. Majid Salahuddin.

Edmonds resident Maria Montalvo last week visited the White House to receive an award as Executive Director of Our Family for Families First Foundation,  The Foundation was awarded the “People’s Choice Winner” in the Joining Forces Community Challenge sponsored by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden. (You can see our interview with Montalvo here.)

First Lady Michelle Obama said of the finalists, “The Challenge Winners are leading by example, and showing that all of us can find a way to serve those who serve us.”

Montalvo is a leader who is serving both nationally, as executive director of the Our Family for Families First Foundation, and locally. She and her husband Strom Peterson own the Resident Cheesemonger in downtown Edmonds and are actively involved in community organizations.

Business development and economic vitality in the Edmonds community are important to Montalvo, who currently serves as vice president of the Edmonds Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that receives and distributes funds to support economic, recreational and educational programs in Edmonds.  The Edmonds Kind of 4th of July celebration is one of the events the Chamber Foundation organizes for the community each year.
