As part of an Earth Day-themed study, Soundview School second graders participated in a cleanup of Brackett’s Landing in Edmonds Monday.
Students of the Lynnwood-based school are studying the biomes of the world, defined as communities classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by how organisms adapt to that particular environment. A significant part of the unit is how human actions affect ecosystems, which leads to impacting the animals that live there.
The class also met with a park ranger and discussed animal habitats and beach ecosystems. Molly Bisset, Soundview School second grade teacher, chose Brackett’s Landing because of its unique and lush ecosystem, including one of the busiest dive parks on the West Coast.
“Earth Day is a chance for all of us to show our appreciation for the plant,” Bisset said. “The beach clean-up is our way of not only giving back to the earth, but it also offers a valuable lesson about how fragile the environment is and how our actions impact numerous species.”
