T-Birds dominate in 4-0 soccer win over Mavericks

By Quint Turner

Conference-leading Shorewood continued its undefeated season in boys soccer with a dominating performance over the Mavericks Monday night at Edmonds stadium. The T-Birds got four goals from four different players, and kept any chances for the Mavs away from goalie Daniel Nadeau. Shorewood put pressure on early and often, and picked up two goals in the first half and two goals in the second. Patrick Gove played the entire game in goal for the Mavericks.

The first minute had a quality scoring chance for Ayk Avanesyan, as he smashed a shot just wide. Two minutes later, Daniel Han hit a shot just outside the box that was saved by Gove. Right after another save for Gove on a Matthew Owen shot in the 10th minute, Shorewood got the ball back, and Han passed to Andreas Gobel right in front of the goal and he buried his shot to make it 1-0 T-Birds.

In the 17th minute, a long shot from Dawda Dibba was fought off and deflected high by Gove to keep the Mavs within one. Later, a corner kick from Avanesyan to Matthew Pettersen was put in the box that was just headed wide. Finally, in the 25th minute, the Mavs almost scored. Chris Prasanna tried a low cross from a sharp angle in the T-Bird box that was cleared away by the defense.

In the 30th minute, Shorewood went up 2-0 when Owusu Fordjour took a lead pass in the box from Owen, and hit it past Gove for the goal. Meadowdale came back and had a one touch shot from Colton Davis get blocked in the 35th minute, and a similar one touch shot from Prasanna right outside the box went just wide. The T-Birds held on to the 2-0 lead going into the half.

In the second half, Shorewood picked up where it left off and scored again in the 48th minute. After a cross in the box was intercepted by the Mavericks, they failed to clear the ball and Han took it 15 feet out and scored to make it 3-0. Nine minutes later, Shorewood scored their last goal of the game when a shot by Dibba from the edge of the box went through a crowd of players in front of Gove and in.

Meadowdale had a sharp-angle shot from Drew McCoy that went wide as they tried to claw their way back. A scary moment happened in the 64th minute when Oliver Smith and Dodge Schaeffer collided in the Shorewood box going after a loose ball, and it looked to be leg-on-leg contact. Fortunately, both were able to walk it off and play. The Mavs were unable to generate any more pressure, and the T-Birds came away with a 4-0 win.

With the win, the T-Birds improve to 10-0 while the Mavs fall to 3-6-1, playing again Wednesday at Lynnwood at 7:30 p.m.
