Community volunteers needed for free summer math, school lunch programs

Thanks to a partnership between the Edmonds School District and the community, school children can take advantage of math tutoring and free lunches at six schools this summer — but they need volunteers on a regular (but not necessarily daily) basis to make it happen.

The program is seeking volunteers weekdays from July 9-Aug. 17 at the following schools:  College Place Elementary School, Mountlake Terrace Elementary School, Alderwood Middle School, Beverly Elementary School, Cedar Valley Elementary School and Edmonds-Woodway High School. Math tutors work from 9-11 a.m. and noon-2 p.m. daily, while lunch volunteers are needed from 11 a.m.-noon.

Positions include:

Site managers — Responsible for making sure the school site is used only as intended, that students remain in areas designated for use by the summer math and lunch program, and that students and volunteers follow program guidelines and rules. They communicate with the volunteer coordinators to make sure that each site has full staffing each day.

Volunteer coordinators — Ensure that volunteers have been approved by the Edmonds School District and schedule volunteers to work at each of the sites. They also make sure that substitute volunteers are sent to help out when someone scheduled to volunteer is unable to work as scheduled.

Lead math instructors — These are volunteers who are proficient in math through at least Algebra 2. They will work with students needing help with higher levels of math. They will provide help on lower level math topics for students who need additional support beyond that provided by the high school math tutors.

Math instructors — Help students with the basics like flash cards, math facts, fractions, decimals and other arithmetic and pre-algebra concepts. Be trained to serve as a Khan Academy Coach monitoring student performance in real time. Direct the high school- and college-age math tutors to students in need of assistance.

Free lunch program supervisors — Volunteers at each site who will coordinate the distribution of lunches, oversee the lunch program volunteers and ensure that the areas used for lunch are supervised, used as intended and that students clean up the area prior to leaving after lunch.

Lunch volunteers — Will interact with children who come for the free lunch to make sure that everyone gets along, behaves in an appropriate and safe manner and has a good time during the lunch period from 11 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday.
