The Miss Peters and May unlimited hydroplane, based in Edmonds, is in sixth place going into Sunday’s Detroit Cup final after two preliminary heats.
Driver JW Myers got drawn into a heat with the Spirit of Qatar and the Oh Boy! Oberto in their first heat of the day. Those two boats have won the last four national championships and have a speed advantage over our local hydroplane, so the Miss Peters and May was only able to achieve a fourth-place finish in the first heat.
As bad as that was for the Miss Peters and May, the day was far worse for the U 22 Matrix Systems; driver Mike Webster got caught in some wash and flipped the boat over. Webster suffered bumps and bruises but the boat was not so lucky and had to withdraw.
While disappointed with the fourth-place finish, owners Scott and Shannon Rainey are not discouraged going into the final day of racing. There are two more preliminary heats for all boats Sunday, and with some better pairings they expect Miss Peters and May to make the final.
