The Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May is on its way to Detroit for this weekend’s Gold Cup hydroplane race. This race — the most prestigious of the year — will be held Saturday and Sunday.
A total of 12 hydroplanes will compete for the coveted Gold Cup trophy. Our local hydro — coming off a fifth-place finish in last week’s Madison, Indiana, race — is expected to do well again.
Miss Peters and May, driven by J. W. Myers. finished second in all of its preliminary heats last weekend, In fact, it was leading in two of them until hitting a rough patch of water that forced Myers to temporarily slow the boat down. The boat was hitting speeds in excess of 180 mph during the race.
Scott Raney and his wife Shannon, who along with driver Myers are co-owners of the boat, were thrilled with the results. The boat sustained some minor damage in the last heat of the day in Madison, but Raney considered it easily to fix.
Look for qualifying and race results this weekend on My Edmonds News.
If they do like they did last weekend in Madison, the H1 Hydroplane website should have streaming video of the races. And if someone could get me seats on the deck at The Roostertale, I’d fly back in a heartbeat.
I would love to know where in Edmonds the boat shop is, would love to see the boat.
