While school is out for the summer, starting next week Edmonds School District students can continue to sharpen their math skills, thanks to a program run by community volunteers. And while they are at it, they can receive a free lunch.

A free summer math program for students in grade 3 or higher, aimed at giving students a better understanding of math concepts, is being offered Monday-Friday, July 9-Aug. 17,  at College Place, Mountlake Terrace, Lynndale, Beverly and Cedar Valley elementary schools, Alderwood Middle School and Edmonds-Woodway High School. There are two sessions to choose from  — 9-11 a.m. or  noon-2 p.m. Space is limited and you can register online here.

Using Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) materials, students receive focused lessons via short video tutorials. Each video is accompanied by interactive practice problems, which allows the student to practice the concepts learned until mastered. Math coaches are on hand to help students work through any concept the student struggles with.

Students will be grouped by both age and ability level to solve problems in teams on dry erase boards, work on math fundamentals and math fact, vocabulary and definition flash cards. Here’s the story we wrote on this program when it launched last summer.

Here are the hours for the summer lunch program, which is offered at no charge to all kids ages 1 through 18. Children just need to show up Mondays through Fridays at the following locations, dates and times:
