Edmonds’ own hydroplane, the Miss Peters and May, qualified fourth fastest Friday for the 2012 Gold Cup in Detroit. This puts our local hydro in excellent position heading into Saturday and Sunday’s preliminary heats.

There were concerns among fans when, in early morning testing, the Miss Peters and May only achieved an average speed of 133 miles an hour, almost 30 mph slower than the top runners. However, when the time came to qualify, driver J. W. Myers pushed to an average speed of over 155 1/2 mph for two laps. The only boats to qualify faster — the Spirit of Qatar, Oh Boy! Oberto and Miss Graham Trucking —  are all previous national champions. This is quite an achievement for the Edmonds boat as the team is only in its second year.

Myers who co-owns the boat with Scott and Shannon Raney, has done an excellent job racing this year by always finding a way to get the inside lane, a significant advantage in a hydroplane racing.

The 12 hydroplanes will race in two sets of preliminary heats on Saturday and then two more sets on Sunday. Based upon points accumulated in those four preliminary heats, the top six boats will race in a winner-take-all final on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Edmonds time.
