Five of the young authors of “We Are Absolutely Not Okay: Fourteen stories by teenagers who are picking up the pieces” read their published essays Thursday evening at the Edmonds Bookshop.
“You are courageous,” was the response of audience members to the teens’ honesty in describing addictive relationships, rehab, cutting and gang initiation. As guests listened alongside editor Ingrid Ricks and supportive Scriber instructors, the teens gave their advice to the grownups and parents in the crowd: “Don’t think we’re not smart;” “we’re the future;” “don’t leave us, no matter what we say;” and “it’s not all your fault.”
Clearly, this is a group of kids with a lot to say and now, as published authors, people are going to listen.
I went to SLHS almost 10 years ago now, and I knew even then that the teachers and students who went there would make a difference on a larger scale, whether it was at the time I attended or years after…
I just finished reading this book, and I was moved. Particularly by Lauren Neins story, as I could relate to her more then anyone.
You all should be so proud of yourselves! I know I am!
