Work has begun on the newest mural mounted by the Edmonds Mural Society. The mural, “Untitled,” by Seattle muralist John Osgood, features an abstracted ferry scene. The mural is being painted on the west wall of Girardi’s Restaurant at 504 5th Ave. in downtown Edmonds. Osgood will continue work on the mural throughout this week.

It’s the 12th mural raised by the non-profit Mural Society, which is in its fourth summer of operations. “‘Untitled’ continues our dream of offering a wide variety of murals for everyone to enjoy,”  said Mural Society municipal liaison Jeff Stilwell. “We have historical, contemporary, realistic, abstracted — it’s becoming a very rich collection.”

Preparation of the mural’s wall — to protect from fading or weather damage — was directed by Society artist liaison Bob Gutcheck.  “We had a great team,” Gutcheck said.  “I was really impressed how quickly it all went once it started.”

The Edmonds Mural Society will mount three murals this summer, and all of them are paid for through members dues and private donations. The nonprofit organization has been awarded 501(c)(3) status, and all donations are tax-deductible.

  1. Has anyone thought about the mural’s look that is being painted, fitting into the type of building or even business? Some of them seem to fight the small town waterfront community we live in; others look like they belong.

  2. While it’s an attractive enough mural, as far as the style of ferry being used, I’d far prefer to see a Steel Electric boat, in its pre-modernization appearance(aka pre-ruination). The Steel Electric class, NIsqually and the rest, served the Edmonds run faithfully for years, and whenever a WSF smashed the dock, it was practically never a Steel Electric, but usually a Jumbo, or those tubs made by Marine Power. Even the WSF uses an S-E for its logo on a new line of hats.. The Steel Electrics gave faithful service, were horribly “modernized”, and were allowed to deteriorate to a shameful state until the State Ferry System was able to junk them off to Mexico, and an ignominious end on a scrapper’s beach(much like what happens in Gujharat and Bangladesh) https://www.evergreenfleet.com/nisquallyretired.html
