A garage fire caused heavy smoke damage to a home north of Edmonds Sunday and displaced a family of four.

The fire was reported at 1:51 p.m. at a two-story house in the 15100 block of 62nd Ave. W. north of Meadowdale Beach Park in unincorporated Snohomish County. “A 12-year-old boy was home alone when he saw smoke inside the house. Shortly after that, smoke alarms sounded. The boy was able to safely exit the house,” said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

Firefighters from Fire District 1 and Lynnwood responded to the fire. They arrived to find flames inside the attached garage and heavy black smoke inside the house. Firefighters had the fire under control within about 15 minutes. No one was injured.

“Firefighters were able to keep the flames contained to the garage area, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house,” Hynes said.

Damage is estimated at $80,000. The house was home to a family of four. Their insurance company assisted them in finding a place to stay.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire. “The 12-year-old boy had been cleaning his room and had moved a plastic container of old toys to the garage shortly before the fire started,” Hynes said. “The fire started in the area of the plastic bin, which contained some battery-powered toys. Investigators have been unable to determine an exact cause, but at this time they do not believe this is a suspicious fire.”
