A Lynnwood police officer is at Harborview Medical Center in serious condition after he and a felony warrant suspect plunged down an 18-foot embankment during a foot pursuit Sunday.
According to Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Session, Lynnwood police pursued the suspect across 196th Street Southwest to the Reclinerland store property in the 3000 block at about 5:15 p.m. When Officer Ryan Hoirup caught up with the suspect and attempted to apprehend him, they both went over the embankment and landed below in the deep gully with nothing breaking their fall.
The circumstances of that physical confrontation are still under investigation, Sessions said.
The suspect, who suffered a broken wrist, was able to continue his flight into the thick woods but was captured by police shortly after.
Hoirup was unable to move and fellow officers were unable to reach him, so the Lynnwood Fire Department responded to get him out. He was transported to Harborview with serious injuries.
The 29-year-old Lynnwood-area suspect had multiple felony and misdemeanor warrants. He was arrested and booked in the Snohomish County Jail for those warrants along with investigation of assault.
Hoirup, 28, was hired by the Lynnwood Police Department in 2007. He is married with a new baby.
This incident caused a very large response by various area law enforcement agencies and fire departments, Sessions said.
I understand there’s a fund being set up to raise money for Officer Hoirup….
