The EWHS Avenue B Jazz Quartet will appear this Sunday from 1-3 p.m. in the final Sea Jazz concert of the summer, which has been sponsored all summer long by the Port of Edmonds on the west side of Anthony’s Homeport.
The Port will be providing an honorarium to the school music programs of all participating musicians, and any money people donate during the performance will go to the musicians themselves. Anthony’s Beach Cafe is providing the performers with a complimentary meal as well.
The members of the EWHS “Avenue B” Jazz Quartet are:
Miles Laven – Drums.
Jack Roben – Guitar
Max Bennett – Tenor Saxophone
Cory Franklin — Bass
Edmonds-Woodway music director Jake Bergevin recently filled us in on the Jazz Colony.
My Edmonds News: What are a few favorite songs that will be played on Sunday?
J.B.: Students focus on jazz standards during the Jazz Colony. This summer there was a loose theme looking at the music of Horace Silver. Some favorite tunes were ‘The Preacher’ and ‘Sister Sadie.’
My Edmonds News: How do students become part of the Colony?
J.B.: All students that participate in the EW jazz colony after freshman year are invited to attend.
My Edmonds News: Please tell us about the summer concerts.
J.B.: Attendance at concerts varies depending on the weather and how many performers are in town. The Bigger crowds this summer at the seajazz gigs were around 50-75 listeners.
My Edmonds News: Any folks you want to single out or thank for helping out?
J.B. I want to celebrate Pete Bennett for his wonderful servant hearted organization and the great instructors; Steve Treseler, Jim Sisko and Dan Taylor.
To follow the Colony, see their blog. And to hear music by instructor Jake Bergevin, check out his tracks.
