Dave Villwock, driving the Spirit of Qatar, and Steve David in his Oh Boy! Oberto each won their preliminary heats in Saturday’s hydroplane race in San Diego. The two are in a tight battle for the overall series championship lead.
With rookie driver Tom Thompson, our local hydroplane the Miss Peters and May was required to start behind the other boats in his heat. This caused a fifth-place finish, putting him in ninth place overall as the racing heads into Sunday.
Thompson will be required the same start in his first heat Sunday before he is allowed to start normally for his third heat in the boat. From that point forward he no longer needs to give the other drivers an advantage.
Each of the 12 boats in the race will run two more preliminary heats Sunday followed by a winner-take-all final. The final heat is scheduled for 5 p.m. Edmonds time. Read the results here in My Edmonds News.
