Driftwood Players fundraiser Kathleen Huston sent this update regarding Saturday evening’s benefit with Overton Berry:
“The performers looked fabulous in their black suits. The custom grand piano by Langlois & Sons made a lovely centerpiece for the stage. Overton Berry, of course, was spot-on and his gracious self. He and his ensemble, including vocalist Kate Wirth, seemed to enjoy the evening as much as the event planners and the VIP ticket holders, who had a nice Champagne reception on stage after the show.
“Rick Steves, his father, Dick, and sister all attended. I had sent Rick a personal letter inviting him to the event. I thought a jazz performance with a custom grand piano might be something Rick would enjoy since he grew up around pianos in Edmonds at his dad’s shop, Steves’ Sound of Music. Years ago Rick’s dad Dick sold a grand piano to the Double Tree, and Overton Berry was the Double Tree’s big draw act during the opening days. Overton helped pick out the Double Tree’s piano at Dick’s store.
“On Saturday night, Rick, Dick and Rick’s sister all got a chance to sit and play Ira’s masterpiece grand piano. They had a ball. Then Geisa Dutra, a very small young lady, stepped forward and slid into the piano seat. Off she went! All eyes turned to the piano and Geisa. There is nothing like listening to a concert pianist tickle the keys of a new custom-built grand piano. Overton Berry kidded Geisa that she gave the piano a real workout. Then Ira Langlois had Overton Berry sign the grand piano. Ira and his family and friends were in heaven.
“The night was a dream come true.”
OB, me and everyone who worked so hard to make this happen are still basking in the after glow. The day and event keeps running through my tired brain! Thank you Janette!
Congratulations on a wonderful event, Kathleen!
