Summer Volunteer Hours are Due Now

Congratulations to students who volunteered their time, energy, and expertise over the summer. Our students continue to make a difference in our community working on various projects as well and impacting the lives of many. Turn in all completed volunteer hours into the career center now. Hours can apply to earn a .5 credit for 90 hours, National Honor Society, and the Presidential Service Award.

Annual Bingo Night/Silent Auction—Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m.

The Bingo/Silent Auction is our major fundraiser for the year and plays a vital role in supporting our Maverick Music Programs and all of our music students. This community-building event is great fun for everyone. Donations are needed, and we need help in procuring items and services for the Bingo/Silent Auction fundraiser. German American Partnership Program Exchange in October

From Oct. 10 through Nov. 1 MHS will welcome 24 visitors from our partner school in Kassel, Germany. The 22 students and 2 teachers will be staying with the families of Meadowdale German students and attending school for three weeks. All of the students from Germany have prepared special presentations that they will be presenting in various classrooms at MHS, as well as Meadowdale Middle and the 6 feeder elementary and K-8 schools. Some of the topics of past presentations included youth sports in Germany, the Brothers Grimm, School Life, and specific historical and cultural events in and around Kassel.

Staff nominated over 40 students and voted these 2 our top students for September.

Senior students are nominated and chosen based on the following criteria:

• Is of service to school and/or community.

• Sets an example of mature behavior for other students.

• Shows responsibility and purpose in academic and vocational pursuits.

• Carries a GPA of 3.2 or better.

• Is respected by staff and peers.

• Is an exemplary representative of Meadowdale High School.

Speaker to Visit Meadowdale

Beginning October we will have professionals from the community share with our students about their profession. Our first career speaker this year is Dr. Zach Streit. He is a Dentist practicing in Edmonds. He received his undergraduate degree at the UW in BioChemistry and went on to the University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry where he received his DDS. Stop by the Career Center to sign up to attend his presentation.

UW – Health Sciences Field Trip

Our first field trip will be to the University of Washington Health Science Center on Oct.18. Students interested in Medicine or medical research should sign up to attend. Students will attend 3 presentations related to the medical field. This is a wonderful opportunity that only presents itself once a year. A limit of 30 students can attend.

Internship Opportunity

ACE Mentor Program – Taking applications Now – Due Date is Oct. 17. Since 2001, the ACE Mentor Program of Washington has introduced Seattle-area high school students to the opportunities available in the architecture, construction, and engineering industries. Each ACE team completes a design project, giving them hands-on experience with the real life challenges industry professionals deal with every day. Volunteers from local firms in the building industry serve as mentors, sharing with the students their insights, perspectives, and experiences, and introducing them to many of the tools used by professionals in the industry. Volunteer Opportunity

Seattle Aquarium is gearing up their winter volunteer program. Mandatory orientation session. Dates are: Saturday, Oct. 8 from 3-4:30 p.m. or Thursday, Oct. 13 from 6-7:30p.m. More info and flyers are available in the career center.

NE quad schools Nov. 7 7:00 pm @Lynnwood High Theater

SE quad schools Nov 14 7:00 pm @ Mountlake Terrace High Theater

SW quad schools Nov. 28 7:00 pm @Edmonds Woodway High Theater

All parents are welcome to attend any of the meetings, even if their resident is not in that particular quadrant. It is an opportunity to hear Superintendent Brossoit provide an update on district events, as well as take questions & dialogue with the audience.

Upcoming Parent Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer forms –If you plan to volunteer during the school year, please be sure to fill out the necessary paperwork. You can download the forms here:  and turn it in to the office. Forms need to be current/completed prior to volunteering. If you are an ESD Staff member you do not need to fill out the WSP part of the form but you DO need to fill out the MHS Volunteer form.
