  1. Those who might support I-1240 need to read the initiative and consider the following:

I-1240 allows for privatization of BOTH Charter school functions, AND the oversight functions of the “Charter Authorizers,” who would supposedly hold charter schools accountable for performance. Private Charter Authorizers would be funded directly by tax dollars, and generate additional revenue selling goods and services to the very charter schools they oversee. That conflict of interest would impair meaninful oversight, when revoking a under-performing charter would cut off revenue streams to private charter authorizers,

Furthermore, I-1240 creates a 9 member State Commission, overseeing the Charter Authorizers, which in turn oversee the charter schools. Do we really need more administrative bureaucracies like this in public education?

If people genuinely want charters, I’ll support them if they’re done the right way. But not like this, where both oversight and operations are privatized and create revenue streams away from classrooms. There’s a right way to do this, but I-1240 is not it.

As a private citizen and proud public school parent, I hope people will read this initiative very carefully before they vote for it, and see if this is really something they want.
