Lead our high school on to fame,

On Oct. 6, 1950, the Edmonds High School Tigers football team saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end. The Tigers, led by quarterback Frank Bly, faced the Snohomish Panthers in their first home game of the year.

The Panthers, a team that was considered fast and tough that year, beat Edmonds 13-0 on the Edmonds gridiron, according to the high school’s newspaper the following week. Prior to the game, Edmonds had dominated Bothell, Mount Si and Sedro-Woolley, and the team was considered “a pretty rough and rugged outfit who hit hard and fast, running and passing out of a single-wing formation.”

There was much excitement over this first home game. The Edmonds High School Pep Club, Band and Twirlers provided entertainment during halftime. Admission to the game was free to those with A.S.B. cards, or 50 cents for those without. The game program cost 5 cents and included the starting lineup, several “songs and yells” to support the team, and a diagram of hand signals used by officials to show violations.

Credit for the Panthers’ win went mostly to George Gamble and Bill Larson, tackle and back, who were able to put the points on the board. Gamble recovered Larson’s fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the first quarter, and late in the third quarter, Jim Fenton bucked across from the three and Larson made the conversion, winding up the scoring in the contest.

The Tigers performed well despite the loss. They finished the season with a 6-1 record and tied with Snohomish for the Northwest League crown. Frank Bly received All-American mention and was named to the All-State team, and Eddie Evans, Jerry Edwards, Bill Parr, and Bly were named to the All-Northwest team.
