Edmonds-Woodway’s boys basketball team finished the regular season on a high note, traveling to Cascade High and blowing out the Bruins, 64-27. The Warriors raced to a 14-0 lead and were ahead 23-4 after one period and up 44-6 at the half.
It was “Senior Night” for the home team Bruins, but on this night, E-W Coach Steve Call elected to go with an all-junior starting line-up for the Warriors. Jason Smarr took over where he left off in Monday’s game, scoring the game’s first eight points on two 3- pointers and a lay-in. Theo Lebesis then made two inside baskets, followed by a Travis Bakken put-back, and quickly it was 14-0 in favor of the visiting team.
Enrique Gonzales scored for Cascade before Sam Wooley drained a 3 for E-W to finish the run for the starting line-up. The seniors were then inserted for the Warriors and Henry Olson, Devin Joseph and Brad Rice added baskets to complete the first quarter domination.
The Warriors then scored the first nine points of the second period — and 20 of the first 21 — at one point jumping to a 44-5 lead before Cascade made a free throw, and E-W led 44-6 at the half. The Warriors’ inside combination of Bakken, Olson and Lebesis were responsible for 17 of the team’s second-quarter points, all on shots from inside the lane. Joseph and Tate Budnick scored the other four, with Budnick also gathering several of his game-high eight assists.
The Warriors also made the first basket of the second half, putting them up by 40 points. This led to the officials instituting the “40 point” rule, whereby the clock keeps running for the rest of the game. With the game clearly in hand, Coach Call elected to substitute freely, resting his regulars and allowing for extended game time for the rest of the team. The Warriors were led in scoring by Smarr with 15, followed by Bakken and Lebesis with 10. Cascade had four players score five points each.
E-W has now won six of its last seven and brings an 11-4 conference record — the best in recent years — into the District playoffs.
The Warriors next face the Bearcats from Monroe at the E-W home gym. Tip-off is 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Warrior Radio.
