E-W wrestlers shut out Jackson, 63-0

By Mike Cooper

When the Edmonds-Woodway High School wrestlers took the mat against Jackson in the Warrior Wrestling Pit Thursday night, they were looking to get back on track after a disappointing loss to Snohomish before the holiday break. Get back on track is exactly what they did. The Warriors demonstrated why they are a favorite to repeat as Wesco South 4A champions again this year by defeating Jackson in a stunning and rare 63-0 shut-out victory.

While the dual meet score was lopsided, there were some exciting individual matches. In the 132 lbs competition between Edmond-s Woodway’s Mark Hood and Jackson’s Isaac Dickerson, the lead changed hand several times before ending regulation in an 8-8 tie, resulting in a one-minute sudden victory overtime round, with both wrestlers starting on their feet in the neutral position. Hood was quick to attack and got in on Dickerson’s legs early to score a takedown and win the match 10-8.

The Warriors go to 4-2 on the season, while Jackson drops to 0-4.

The next dual meet for EWHS is Thursday, Jan. 10 at Cascade, before E-W returns home Friday, Jan. 11 at 5:45 p.m. to take on Moses Lake in a non-conference match-up.  Both EWHS and Moses Lake are highly ranked teams in the statewide polls.

In the latest 4A high school wrestling rankings, five Edmonds-Woodway Warriors are ranked in the top 10 in their weight class.  Leading the way is junior, Noah Cuzzetto ranked 1st at 120 lbs.  Cuzzetto is the 2012 4A state champion at 106 lbs. Also ranked are Nathan Vulliet, 9th at 145 lbs; Matt Cuzzetto, 3rd at 160 lbs; Marq Brown, 6th at 170 lb; and George Johanson, 5th at 285 lbs.
