The Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation and the Edmonds Arts Commission released the following information about featured artist Catherine Gill.

The Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation and the Edmonds Arts Commission are pleased to present the artwork of Catherine Gill. The exhibit will open on Feb. 5 and run through March 13 at the Frances Anderson Center.

The artist states, “My artwork is involved with interpreting the land, seeing its space in terms of a design of abstracted, simple landscape pieces, expressing the movement and discovering connections in how the pieces fit together. Determining symbols that create movement and discovering images that will visually and emotionally maneuver the viewer is an integral part of the creative process for me.”

Catherine Gill has lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest for 30 years. In 1998 the Edmonds Arts Festival Limited Edition Poster “Sunset Avenue Shoreline” was created by Gill. She paints on location in watercolor, oil, and pastel, and is also a print maker.

She teaches painting and printmaking out of her studio in Seattle, as well as throughout the United States, Europe, China and Australia. Her artwork has been featured in The Artists Magazine and Watercolor Magic, and has been exhibited internationally. Catherine is also co-founder of Art Partners International, an organization dedicated to bringing together artists and art of different cultures. She is a member of Northwest Watercolor Society, Women Painters of Washington, Plein Air Painters of Washington, Seattle Print Arts and Print Arts NW.

The paintings in the EAF Museum all have rivers as subject matter. The artwork is done mostly over the past three years, much of it in the last year, and all is plein air done in Washington state. The paintings are mostly mixed media (“Principle of Ooze”), with one or two straight watercolor. Ooze is what Catherine calls the mixing of chalk pastel into wet watercolor, done in layers. She has several short instructional videos on her website which give a sense of what she teaches in workshops throughout the year. Catherine has a book on painting, “Powerful Watercolor Landscapes” released by Northlight in February 2011.

The work in the EAC Display Case will feature her printmaking techniques. The artist expresses the benefits of this medium for her, “Using printmaking and mixed media painting allows me to experiment with creating depth of imagery to correspond with the depth of the personal experience of a particular place.”
