On a night when Mountlake Terrace honored its senior wrestlers and its retiring head coach, the Meadowdale Mavericks crashed the party by defeating Terrace 59-24 in the final home dual meet for the Hawks this year.
The Mavericks sport a strong contingent of wrestlers on their squad, four who are state ranked by washingtonwrestlingreport.net. “I’m proud of our kids who wrestled those state-ranked kids,” said Hawk Coach Kanoe Vierra. “They wrestled them tough, a lot tougher than I thought they would wrestle them.”
The wrestling was overshadowed by a ceremony recognizing Vierra and his 19 years coaching in the wrestling program at the high school. In addition to being recognized by current wrestlers and their parents, he was honored by more than 20 alumni who were on hand.
“I’ve been involved with wrestling for 50 years,” Vierra said following the meet. “I love the sport; I love what it does. When I look around at these guys I think it is just incredible to see what they are doing now. For them to come tonight was a good surprise. All I wanted was to get through tonight and go away quietly. But other people had other things in mind.”
Although Vierra will be stepping aside from the head coaching duties following this season, he’s not retiring from education. He teaches English and serves as the Dean of Students at Scriber High School, and hopes to continue helping out with the development of high school wrestlers in the area.
“I will probably come into the room periodically,” Vierra confessed. He wants to stay involved with the freshman program, and help to continue to grow girls wrestling at the high school level in the south Snohomish County and north King County area.
