The Edmonds-Woodway boys basketball team returned home Friday night and bounced back in a big way, turning a fast start into a 69-47 defeat of the Monroe Bearcats. The Warriors’ balanced scoring attack was led by junior forward Travis Bakken, who scored 18 points.
The first quarter saw the Warriors’ twin bigs, Bakken and Henry Olson, dominate the undersized Bearcats as the two scored 13 of the Warriors’ first-quarter 24. All five of the starters scored in the opening frame. Monroe held to just eight points, managing to convert just three of their 12 shot attempts.
The second period was an even match, with both teams scoring 12 points. At halftime, E-W was comfortably ahead 36-20. Bakken had 12 first-half points and Alex Hull continued his recent scoring spurt, adding eight points.
In the third quarter, Bearcat junior guard Hunter Bingham attempted numerous 3s, converting three of them as the visitors from Monroe tried to make a game of it. Senior guard Devin Joseph would have none of it, continually penetrating and either dishing or drawing fouls. He scored seven points in the period, including going five-for-five from the free throw line. At the end of the third, the Warriors had increased their lead to 56-35.
E-W held the Bearcats at bay in the fourth quarter leading to the final 22 point margin of victory.
In addition to Bakken’s 18, Warriors’ scoring leaders were Hull with 12, Joseph and Olson adding 11 each, and Jason Smarr chipping in 9. With the win, the Warriors moved to 6-3 in Wesco play, remaining tied with Kamiak for the critical second seed, while the Bearcats fall to 3-6.
E-W next travels to Lake Stevens on Tuesday for the final game against the North division and then play undefeated Jackson at the Timberwolves’ gym on Friday the 18th. The Jackson game can be heard on Warrior Radio.
