The Edmonds-Woodway softball team finished off its pre-season games Monday with a 10-1 victory over the Shorewood Thunderbirds.
In the first, Katelynn Lafferty walked the first batter and the second one got on base with an error. However Lafferty was able to quickly strike out the next two batters, followed by a fly ball caught by Lauren Nguyen.
Shorewood starting pitcher Vreni Hutt would start off her first inning the same way, walking Cassady Orstad. That was followed by a triple from Brooklynn Bailey that brought home Orstad. Taylor Jones then hit a single to score Bailey, who finished the day going 4-for-4 with three hits and a walk, plus 4 RBIs. It was 2-0 Warriors at the end of one inning.
Shorewood had the same outcome in the second inning — four batters up and four down, leaving one on base with no score. During E-W’s at-bat, the Warriors’ Kaylie Whitmore ripped one to right field, followed by Lauren Nguyen’s hit to left field. Then Orstad got hit with a pitch and loaded the bases for Brooklynn Bailey. She brought both Whitmore and Nguyen home with a well-placed single to right field, making it 4-0.
In the third, Shorewood went scoreless and gave up another two runs to the Warriors. Sydney Forsyth was hit with a pitch and Ari Girouard was walked. Both runners stole bases and moved themselves into scoring position during the first pitch to Lafferty. After the second pitch, Lafferty hit a high bomb out to center field which was caught, but gave Forsyth plenty of time to tag up and head home. Girouard, seeing the ball thrown to home, would move to third base. On a wild pitch to Whitmore, Girouard stole home.
Trailing 6-0, Shorewood got a slight break in the fourth. Stephanie Vollbredt walked and Laura Smith hit a single. Ebony Harrison got on base through an error, and another error put Carli Herman on base, scoring Smith. The Warriors still pressed on and added to two more in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth inning, with an 8-0 lead, the Warrior defense was strong. Lafferty got one out at first and struck one out and Girouard caught a fly ball. At the plate, E-W kept the hits coming. Orstad walked, then stole second on the first pitch to Bailey, who singled to bring Orstad home.
In the sixth, the Warriors held the Thunderbirds again to just three batters, with two putouts by Moni Jackson and a strikeout by Lafferty. During E-W’s next at bat, Girouard scored again following a line drive by Makayla Monroe, making score 10-0.
Shorewood got two players on base via walks in the seventh inning but not able to capitalize on it and the game was over.
The Warriors will start league play against Lynnwood Wednesday on the Royals’ home field at 4 p.m.
