Lady Warriors fall to Mavs in season softball opener

In the season opener for both teams, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors fell to the Lady Mavs 7-2, with the decisive runs scored in the final inning Tuesday on E-W’s home field.

The Warriors took the field and scored their first run in the first inning. Samone Jackson was first at bat and hit a single then stole second base and then third base. Brooklynn Bailey came up and smashed a single out to right field, bringing in Jackson.

The Jackson/Bailey pair would do the same in the third inning, only this time Bailey would send a rocket out into right field that would hit the fence and give her a triple, again scoring Jackson.

The E-W defense remained strong and took the Mavs into the fifth inning before allowing them to score. Alyssa Reuble hit a deep triple into right field that was followed by Hailey Tayler’s double off an error, making the score 2-1 Warriors.

Neither team scored in the the sixth inning, but Meadowdale came screaming back in the seventh.

The Mavs started their seventh-inning run when Ashley Brooke stepped up to the plate, hitting a double to center field. Reuble then hit a double, bringing in Brooke, and the Mavs would escalate from there. Cheyanne Strock got walked, Nikki Steg hit a single and Tiffany Dwayne hit a double that brought in Reuble. Then the younger Julia Reuble hit a single that brought in Strock, followed by Hailey Costello’s single and finally full circle back to Brooke, who added a single to bring in Steg.

Ari Girouard was the only player able to get on base in the Warriors’ last attempt at bat. She hit a single over the shortstop’s head and then successfully stole second base, but that was all the Warriors had left. In the end, the Lady Mavs walked away owning the diamond and the non-league game.
