Warriors defeat Chargers 11-1 on home turf

On Friday, with the sun shining, the Edmonds-Woodway softball team took charge of the Marysville-Getchell Chargers, defeating them 11-1 with the mercy rule coming into play in the fifth inning.

In her first at bat, Samone Jackson sent one soaring into left field. She then stole third base on the first pitch to Cassady Orstad, who went on to hit a single into right field, bringing Jackson home. After Orstad stole second, she came on Katelynn Lafferty’s hit. Next up, Sydney Forseth hit a single followed by Ari Girouard’s single and another run scored.

The Chargers caught a break in the second inning. Jordan Lauriton walked on base and got pushed all the way home when Ashlynn Hood bunted the ball but the throw to first went popping out of the glove and the ball rolled out to the fence in right field. It would be the only run scored for the Marysville-Getchell team.

The Warriors continued to add to the total when it came their turn to hit in the second inning. Lauren Nguyen was hit by a pitch and took her base. Jackson moved her around with a single to center field. Orstad then loaded the bases, singling to left field. Brooklynn Bailey hit a sacrifice fly scoring Nguyen and Lafferty hit another single scoring Jackson. Forseth finished out the 3 run inning with a single that brought in Orstad.

In the third inning, E-W just followed the groove it had set and once Mikayla Monroe got walked, the action started again. Nguyen singled to left field and Jackson bunted and beat the throw. Meanwhile, the Chargers’  first baseman didn’t see that Monroe was still running so E-W added yet another run. Orstad walked on, Lafferty singled bring in Jackson and Orstad would steal home on a wild pitch.

The fourth inning was quiet on both sides but the fifth inning would finish off the Chargers. Bailey was walked, and McKenzie Brendemuhl singled just out of reach of the second baseman. Then Forseth sent a rocket out to the fence in center field, bringing in Bailey. Ana Matulovich came up to bat but never got to finish as Forseth scored on a wild pitch and the game was called due to mercy rule.

EW plays Mountlake Terrace Monday, March 18, at 4 p.m. at MTHS. Warrior fans who can’t make it to the game are invited to watch it streamed live over the Hawks Live Sports Network.
