According to the National Rosacea Society, an estimated 16 million Americans have rosacea, yet only a small fraction are being treated. Rosacea mainly affects skin on the face and causes redness on the nose, chin, cheeks and forehead. Over time, the redness can become more intense and blood vessels and pustules may become visible.

Although the cause of rosacea is not known, avoiding triggers will help reduce rosacea flare ups. Food triggers include alcohol (especially red wine), spicy foods and hot drinks.

Activities that contribute to rosacea flares include strenuous exercise or heavy exertion, hot baths or saunas. Extreme weather conditions can also influence rosacea flares such as extreme cold or hot weather.

While there is no cure for rosacea, medical therapies are available and steps may also be taken to effectively control symptoms of redness. Appropriate skin care such as gentle cleansers and moisturizers, prescription topical creams to reduce inflammation in the skin, and laser treatments are all effective ways to manage and reverse the signs and symptoms related to rosacea.
