A lot is going on at Edmonds Community College this week, as students complete their studies for the quarter. Jazz students will showcase their work in the Black Box Theater Wednesday, May 29 and students in the Digital Music program are presenting their hard work in the Black Box Theater on Friday June 7. Instructor Nick Sibicky calls Digital Music “one of the most exciting, advanced, and forward-thinking community college programs in the country.” “Musaic” combines live vocal sampling, piano processing, guitar looping, special effects, and instrument simulations. The Classical Music student showcase is June 5 at 7:30 p.m., and the Vocal Recital is June 9 at 2 p.m. All shows are open to the public, and a suggested $7 donation will support EdCC music scholarships.

“Innovate,” the 2013 Student Art Exhibit, has been up since May 13 in the Lynnwood Hall third floor Art Gallery at EdCC and will run until June 13. The gallery will host an artist’s reception on Friday, May 31 from 4:30-6:30 p.m., featuring a performance by music students and catered by students in the Culinary Arts program.

Culinary graduates have been showing off their creative skills all quarter, and Caitlan Wilson of The Cheesemonger’s Table has her menu featured in the Café this week, with a healthy dose of fried, melted happiness. If you’re in need of comfort food, be sure to stop for lunch at Edmonds Community College this week. Reservations are recommended for the Café’s short hours (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday), so call ahead to 425-640-1405.

Gallery North has announced their Call to Artists for the 2013 Plein Air Edmonds events and Beauty of the Northwest Convention. Experienced painters will lead weekly paint out sessions through July, providing insight and instruction on plein air, or outdoor, painting technique. Landscape paintings, drawings, and other 2-dimensional art (except photography) completed during Plein Air Edmonds—though participation is not required—may be entered into the Beauty of the Northwest juried show to be exhibited at Gallery North in August. Prizes, including a $200 Grand Prize, will be awarded, and all artists will have the opportunity to sell their work. The registration fee of $25 also includes the option to submit an image for the Beauty of the Northwest Poster Contest. The selected artist will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Digital Canvas Northwest. Registration is due by June 22, the date of the first Plein Air session. Interested artists should check the Gallery North website for complete information and online registration.

dachsundsA HUGE congratulations to Kizzie Jones and the Kathie Humphries Design & New Media  company! Jones’s book, “How Dachsunds Came to Be: A Tall Tale About a Short Long Dog,” just won the 2013 National Indie Excellence Award in the children’s book category. It tells the story of a little girl wishing for a friend from the sea. When it becomes apparent that none of the sea creatures offered up will make a suitable friend, the sea combines its powers to create the perfect friend for the girl, three times over! Scott Ward’s illustrations help to bring this charming origin tale to life. Jones and Humphries will be honored at the BookExpo America in New York City over the weekend.
