For My Edmonds News’ Pet Month, Merrillee Bradshaw submitted this update on her pet clothing line:

“I have been in business designing and selling pet clothing since 2004, under the business name, Buttercup & Peanut. We just moved to Edmonds, and will now be designing and selling my items from my home here!

“In 2002, my daughter, Rebecca, brought home a darling little Chihuahua boy, Peanut. He was the sweetest, most darling little Peanut, came from Texas, and it is quite a bit cooler up here in the northwest….so, what did we do? Started making him his own little custom shirts, of course!

Less than a year after Becca adopted Peanut, I adopted my own little Chihuahua girl, Buttercup. Oh, how I loved that little punkin’! The first thing I did when I picked her up from California was to…..you guessed it….put a little sweater on her. Soon I was making little dresses for my Buttercup and matching or coordinating shirts for Peanut. Of course, everyone we ran into LOVED their outfits. So, being entrepreneurs at heart, Rebecca and I started selling our cute doggie designs under the label, Buttercup & Peanut. We’ve been selling them ever since!

“Buttercup & Peanut were in Becca’s wedding in 2006. Buttercup wore a dress which matched the bridesmaids’ dresses, and Peanut wore a black on black embroidered damask tux with a white dupioni silk Tux shirt and a green bow tie, matching the groomsmen.

What makes our pet clothes different than everyone else’s? First and foremost is quality! Our pet clothes are made from the finest cottons, wools, silks and other supreme fabrics. All seams are finished with a serger for durability. We use high quality trims, closures and buttons, as well. We NEVER skimp. Since we treat our pets as children, our designs are reminiscent of high-end boutique children’s clothing. It’s an enchanting look, and though not as trendy as some designers, our designs are classic and will stand the test of time!

“I LOVE dressing little girl dogs in frilly little dresses!  They seem to just ‘know’ they are pretty and tend to prance and smile. One of my favorites is the Black & White Damask dress featured in the picture I submitted.  It’s got lots of details like black scrolly trim and fun aqua daisies around the waist. Perfect for a Birthday party – or a walk around downtown Edmonds!

“I’ve been a full-time mom, an auto repair business owner, a church secretary, an office administrator for an investment firm.  I’ve pretty much always run this business in tandem with other efforts.  I’ve done costuming for local film production companies, such as Star Trek Phoenix, custom sewing just about everything….and I’ve also been working on a line of children’s clothing that coordinates with my pet clothing, which can also be seen on my website.

“We just moved to Edmonds the middle of April. This is a dream come true, as I lived in Edmonds many years ago, from preschool through third grade, and my happiest growing up memories were always here.  I would LOVE to do a doggy fashion show at some point in one of the Parks…I did one in Gig Harbor a few years ago, which was sooo much fun. We even had a doggy wedding at the event, officiated by the mayor! It was a hoot!”
