The Mountlake Terrace Hawks and the Meadowdale Mavericks had already met twice during the 2013 season, each time producing one-run thrillers before meeting again on Thursday, this time for a district title. Once again the teams staged a dramatic one-run clash, and for the third time it was the Mavericks that came out on the winning end.
Meadowdale slipped by the Hawks 6-5 and captured the 3A District 1 Softball Championships at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett.
Both teams will move on to the WIAA 3A State Softball Championships that begin with regional action on Saturday, then continue on May 24-25 at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
After Meadowdale jumped to an early 1-0 lead after one inning, there was no scoring until late game fireworks by both teams. Terrace started it off by scoring three in the top half of the sixth after a double by Hannah Fickle, an RBI single by Maddy Kristjanson, and a two-run single by Kelsey Watson.
The Mavericks came back in their half of the sixth inning with five runs of their own to take a 6-3 lead. The big blow was a three-run homer by Meadowdale’s Samantha Gregoryk that just cleared the left field fence.
Terrace climbed back to within one in the top of the seventh when Hannah Wilcox sent a ball high off the banking way beyond the left field fence.
Maverick pitcher Alyssa Reuble struck out 12 Hawks total, 7 K’s recorded against Terrace’s three-four-five hitters, Kristjanson, Hannah Baisch and Rene Bos. “She gets ahead in the count and throws her pitches,” Hawk Head Coach Shannon Rasmussen said of Meadowdale’s top pitcher.
While disappointed with the lost, Rasmussen was please with her team’s effort against the Mavericks, not just on Thursday but all season long. “We literally have gone inning-to-inning and batter-to-batter with them,” she said.
“I would love another shot at Meadowdale. That was one of the things that the girls really wanted, to be able to beat them. I just told them we can’t hang our head about it. We battled them every time. They have got to be one of the best in the state.”
