Socially Single: Garage sale season

It’s officially THAT season. I’m not talking about spring or baseball season. I’m talking about garage sale season! In my estimate, garage sale season begins around the time we have a string of two partially-sunny days in a row and lasts until sometime in September.

In fact, I’m working with some friends on putting together a garage sale in the coming weeks. Which has me going through old stuff and deciding what to keep, what to sell, and what to just get rid of. This process is freeing up space in my house, obviously, but it also frees up some mental and emotional space.

The simple exercise of purging our physical belongings starts an emotional process, too. It’s healthy and a great way to symbolically grow into a new period in your life. I think garage sale season is a great time for all of us to take a proactive inventory of our mental “stuff”, too. Think about what memories, emotions, regrets, and wishes are you holding on to? Which ones are weighing you down and are worth letting go?

Once you’ve decided what you want to emotionally let go of, take a look around to see if there are physical items that represent those emotions or memories. Maybe now is the time to let go of some of those items, as well. Clearing out both your actual stuff and your mental stuff makes room for you to create new memories and invite new people into your life.

Just in time to enjoy the season 🙂
