The Edmonds City Council got a status report from Transportation Engineer Bertrand Hauss on upcoming transportation projects from 2014-19 that are part of the city’s Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program. Among them:
– Safety improvements to the 228th Street Southwest/Highway 99 corridor, with close to 90 percent of design complete and negotiations for right of way ongoing. Construction is scheduled to start in summer 2014 with completion set for spring of 2015.
– The Five Corners roundabout project, with design and right of way negotiations scheduled to be completed by December. Construction is set to begin in spring 2014 with completion by fall of that year.
– Phase 3 of the Highway 99 enhancement project, which involves adding lights along Highway 99 from 220th Street Southwest to 212th Street Southwest.
– Three “Sidewalks to Schools” pedestrian projects aimed at improving student pedestrian safety throughout the city.
These projects are mostly funded through federal and state grants, with some local matching funds, and Haus noted that completion of many of the projects in the six-year transportation plan are dependent on acquiring additional grant money. You can see the complete list of projects here.
Following a public hearing, during which no citizens testified, the council unanimously approved the plan.
In other action, the council:
– Unanimously reversed, after a closed record review, a city hearing examiner’s final decision that had granted critical areas and setback variances related to a new home planned for 1139 Sierra Place. The decision had been appealed by a group of homeowners located near the vacant property, who argued that the home shouldn’t be built on a wetland. Some councilmembers agreed with the wetlands argument, while others cited the lack of clarity and inconsistency in the hearing examiner’s ruling as their reason for voting to reverse the decision.
– Voted 7-0 to add a second city council representative to the Citizens Economic Development Commission. Councilmember Strom Peterson will join Joan Bloom as council representatives to the 17-member commission.
