The Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May unlimited hydroplane left town Thursday afternoon for the next two races on the H1 unlimited circuit.
After a relatively successful first race in Sacramento last month, team owners Scott and Shannon Raney are confident of improved performance as they continue to tweak their new boat.
The first race will be next weekend in Madison, Indiana. This race has been a staple on the unlimited hydroplane circuit since 1961. The following weekend the boats will all head to Detroit for the Gold Cup, the hydroplane racing equivalent of the Indianapolis 500.
The Gold Cup was originally held in 1904 and has been staged in a variety of cities, including Seattle and Kennewick, Wash. For the past decade, the race has been held in Detroit.
Favorites headed into these next two races would have to be Steve David in the Oh Boy! Oberto and Jimmy Shane in the Graham Tracking. Our local hydro finished seventh in the race in Sacramento and is expecting a move up the ladder at the next two races.
After the Eastern swing, the boats will then take three weeks off before running the races in Washington state at the end of July and beginning of August.
