Seattle-area media outlets began reporting Monday about an incident at Edmonds’ Chase Lake Community School last Friday, where students allegedly brought toy Nerf guns to school as part of a school assignment, then were suspended due to the Edmonds’ School District’s policy against toy weapons.
The school district said it couldn’t go into detail, citing student privacy issues, but issued the following statement about the news reports:
“There was an incident at Chase Lake Community School last Friday where disciplinary action took place. Since we can’t discuss discipline of any student, that’s as much as we can say about what happened. We would like to reiterate that safety is of utmost importance and a weapon on campus of any kind is a very serious issue to us. We are in alignment with state law and the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction with regards to weapons and toy weapons on campus. According to our district procedures regarding toy weapons, disciplinary action shall be at the discretion of the building administrator. There is also a process in place for students and families to raise concerns over disciplinary action.”
