Driving the Edmonds-based Miss Peters and May, Tom Thompson took a second-place finish in his first heat Saturday at the Diamond Cup hydroplane race in Coeur d’Alene.

Thompson got lane two before the start and was the first boat across the starting line. He led the field out of the first corner and drove the boat to its best performance of the year.

Jimmy Shane, driving Seattle’s Graham Trucking, was on the inside and was able to use the advantage of the shorter course to track down our local boat and eventually win the heat. Thompson never gave up, however, and the two boats ran close for the entire heat. Mark Evans took third with his FEDCO hydroplane and Greg Hopp was fourth in the Miss DiJulio. Rookie driver Dave Warren got his first unlimited heat in and finished sixth with the Miss Sahara Pizza.

In the other unlimited heat for the day, Steve David won with the Oh Boy! Oberto followed by the Beacon Plumbing, driven by J Michael Kelly, Kip Brown in the Spirit of Qatar and Mike Webster with the Payne West Insurance boat.

Peters and May owners Scott and Shannon Raney were excited after the first heat performance. “All of the hard work the team has put in is beginning to pay off,” Shannon Raney said.

There will be two more sets of preliminary heats Sunday followed by the winner-take-all final at 4:10 p.m. Follow the action on My Edmonds News.
